I have been tutoring for over 20 years. As an undergraduate, I worked in the Math lab at The University of Texas at San Antonio tutoring math classes from elementary education math methods through college algebra and calculus. In addition, I also worked as a grader for three semesters for a math professor, which included tutoring his students.
I have tutored math at many different levels, including elementary school mathematics, junior high mathematics, pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus I – II, discrete mathematics, SAT math, ACT math and GRE math. In addition, I was adjunct faculty teaching mathematics at the junior college level as well and I also tutor high school physics.
I have tutored students from elementary school through age 60+. I have taught 6th grade through high school and junior college mathematics.
Anyone can learn math. It is up to me as the tutor to connect with students and provide the level of scaffolding needed for them. I like to use the “I do, we do, you do” approach to make sure students are understanding key concepts from the lesson.
I have worked with many special needs students. One student in particular was concerned because he had to pass the exit level high school exam to earn a diploma. His math skills were not high enough to pass initially so we started working through a refresher workbook his teacher had given him to prepare for the test.
While we were working together, I noticed he had some difficulty connecting concepts from the beginning to the end of a question, particularly word problems. That is when I started color coding concepts together so he could visually see the connection. He began to use color coding on his work as well and his improvement was obvious! He was able to pass his test and earn a high school diploma.
● Playing games of all kinds, especially card games like hearts, euchre and cribbage
● Playing the electric bass guitar (I am pretty much a hack but I enjoy it)
● Listening to old school rock and roll
