The tutor's perspective
Every one of these families mentioned feeling supported along the way. We asked Eppie what that actually looks like from her side, starting with how she works with a new, anxious student. She starts by making the test feel a lot less foreign:
"My go to way of helping a new student who is feeling anxious is to walk them through my course and explain how Bluebook, College Board, Superscoring, and the test taking process goes. I generally just make them feel like it's no big deal. They can just trust the process and follow instructions without having to think too hard, and they will succeed."
She's just as deliberate about planning each student's sessions. Depending on whether a student has already taken the exam, she reviews their score breakdown, but she also makes sure nothing gets skipped:
"This depends on whether they've taken an exam before. If they have, I analyze their score breakdown. But honestly, I usually make all students go through certain subjects, and if it's just a refresher, that's still needed. All of my students get grammar instruction, exponential equation instruction, quadratic instruction, etc. Even if they already know how to solve it, my strategies tend to make it go faster and use less brainpower, which is needed for the rest of the timed test (and their sanity)."
After years of tutoring, what sticks with her most isn't the fastest win:
"My favorite is when they go from a really low score like 900 to a 1300. This usually takes a long time, a whole summer or even more, so when parents really trust the process and allow me to work my magic, it's uplifting."
