Why Miami students love Learner

Chelsea from Learner helped me to get a full ride to Duke University.

“Chelsea from Learner was the perfect match for me. She customized the training so that it would push me hard - but not too hard where I would get frustrated. I worked with Chelsea for years because she took a genuine interest in me and my future.”

"Stephanie taught me how to be more organized. I was getting Bs and Cs before I started working with her. I used to get overwhelmed before studying for a test. Stephanie taught me how to create “study guides” so I’d have all the big ideas in one place. I am now getting As and Bs and my parents are much happier."

"When I first started working with Alan, I told him I would never be good at math. I barely passed my first two years of high school math and I needed one more hard math class to graduate. Alan believed in me and worked with me on the basics. Little by little, he built up my confidence to the point where I realized I am good at math and I did well in the class."

Miami math standards

The Florida State Board of Education adopted the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (BEST) Standards for Mathematics in February of 2020. The BEST Standards for Mathematics will be fully implemented in the 2022-2023 academic year, together with aligned classroom materials and assessments.

Miami, FL, public schools follow these statewide standards. The goals of the BEST Math Standards are to provide students with math instruction that prioritizes simplicity, practicality, and specificity. The new standards don’t require students to use multiple strategies to solve problems and offer various pathways to complete the math requirements to graduate from high school.

Florida elementary and middle school students focus on basic math concepts, including number sense, operations, functions, algebraic reasoning, and mathematical thinking. High school students learn about data analysis, geometric reasoning, trigonometry, and logic. They also gain financial literacy skills and learn the basics of discrete mathematics and calculus.

Miami math test scores

In 2019, the average National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) mathematics score for 8th-grade public school students in Miami-Dade County was 276. Scores on this exam range from 0 to 500, so the average Miami-Dade student score of 276 is slightly better than the mean. Additionally, 64% of 8th-grade students earned scores at or about the NAEP Basic level, and 27% of students performed at or above the NAEP Proficient level.

Most Miami high school students have the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT college entrance exams. In 2019 (the most recent year for which ACT data is available), an estimated 54% of eligible students took the ACT, and the average composite score was 20.1. In the same year, 33% of Florida graduates met the ACT Math College Readiness Benchmark.

Data from Florida in 2021 shows that 81% of the 2021 graduates took the SAT in high school. The mean score on the math portion was 480 (out of a possible 800).
