Unlike many other states, Texas doesn’t follow the Common Core standards for math. Rather, the State Board of Education adopted the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards for math in 2012.
TEKS for Mathematics provides instruction for teaching math to students from elementary school through high school. Data from 2019 indicates that the average NAEP math score for Dallas students was 264, which is lower than the average score for students in large cities (274).
Additionally, the data shows a downward trend in test scores in Dallas; the average score in 2019 was lower than in 2017 (268), which was lower than in 2011 (274). Only 15 percent of Dallas students performed at or above the NAEP “proficient” level in 2019, which was lower than the percentage in 2017 (20 percent) and 2011 (22 percent).
