Dallas Math Standards

Unlike many other states, Texas doesn’t follow the Common Core standards for math. Rather, the State Board of Education adopted the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards for math in 2012.

TEKS for Mathematics provides instruction for teaching math to students from elementary school through high school. Elementary school students focus on number sense and basic operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also get a basic look at algebraic reasoning and measurement.

Middle school curricula build on these topics and introduce proportional relationships, expressions, and the basics of personal finance.

High school students must complete Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to graduate. They must complete a further two credits of math, and there are several options, including geometry, pre-calculus, advanced quantitative reasoning, statistics, and discrete mathematics for problem-solving. The TEKS guidance for high school math students states that they should understand linear functions, equations, and inequalities along with quadratic functions and algebraic methods. They must also be familiar with real-world applications of math.

Dallas Math Test Scores

The Nation’s Report Card provides details on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test results for public school 8th-grade students in Dallas. Data from 2019 indicates that the average NAEP math score for Dallas students was 264, which is lower than the average score for students in large cities (274).

Additionally, the data shows a downward trend in test scores in Dallas; the average score in 2019 was lower than in 2017 (268), which was lower than in 2011 (274). Only 15 percent of Dallas students performed at or above the NAEP “proficient” level in 2019, which was lower than the percentage in 2017 (20 percent) and 2011 (22 percent).

In 2021, 59 percent of Texas high school graduates had taken the SAT prior to graduation. The mean score in the math section was 498, which is below the college-readiness benchmark score of 530. Only 38 percent of test-takers met the math benchmark.

How Dallas Students Can Benefit from Working with Learner

Better grades and confidence

Many Dallas students struggle with math, especially in middle and high school. Learner tutors help their students grasp math fundamentals so they can apply them in upper-level courses. This in-depth knowledge helps students get better grades and feel confident in their abilities.

Individualized instruction

Dallas' large classes can be distracting and stressful, and it can be tough for students to catch up once they fall behind. Learner gives your child the chance to get one-on-one instruction in a safe, distraction-free environment. Your student’s tutor will customize each lesson for their needs and goals.

Preparation for college and career

Students need a firm foundation in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry before heading off to college. Learner can help your child feel prepared for the SAT and ACT as well as university math courses. With this strong foundation in math, students are ready for success in college and beyond.

Why Dallas Students Love Learner

Chelsea from Learner helped me to get a full ride to Duke University.

“Chelsea from Learner was the perfect match for me. She customized the training so that it would push me hard - but not too hard where I would get frustrated. I worked with Chelsea for years because she took a genuine interest in me and my future.”

"Stephanie taught me how to be more organized. I was getting Bs and Cs before I started working with her. I used to get overwhelmed before studying for a test. Stephanie taught me how to create “study guides” so I’d have all the big ideas in one place. I am now getting As and Bs and my parents are much happier."

"When I first started working with Alan, I told him I would never be good at math. I barely passed my first two years of high school math and I needed one more hard math class to graduate. Alan believed in me and worked with me on the basics. Little by little, he built up my confidence to the point where I realized I am good at math and I did well in the class."

Popular Math Tutoring Subjects for Dallas Students
