Las Vegas, NV, math standards

Las Vegas public schools adhere to the Nevada Mathematics Standards established by the state's Department of Education. These standards are to give educators a clear understanding of what their students should know, including basic math facts, graphs, numerical relationships, geometry measurements, and mathematical tools (e.g., calculators).

The Nevada Mathematics Standards are divided into 5 sections: Numbers, Number Sense, and Computation; Spatial Relationships and Geometry; Patterns, Functions, and Algebra; Measurement; and Data Analysis. There is a content standard for each section that correlates to each (relevant) grade, from kindergarten through 12th.

For example, kindergarten students should be able to use concrete objects to model essential addition and subtraction. By 4th grade, students should be able to recite multiplication and division facts for numbers from 1 through 12.

When it comes to Mathematical Reasoning, elementary school students should be able to explain how to solve problems by manipulating physical models. Middle school math students must be able to present solutions without physical models. High school math students should be able to construct and defend real-world mathematical conclusions using logical arguments.

Las Vegas math test scores

In Nevada, students in grades 3 through 8 take the Smarter Balanced assessments in mathematics. Assessment results from 2021 show that only 22.1% of elementary students, 20.5% of middle school students, and 21.3% of high school students were proficient in math.

Like many places in the country, Nevada saw a significant drop in standardized test scores in 2021, which correlated with the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID protocols affected school attendance, and issues with remote learning translated to poor academic performance.

Las Vegas high school students generally take college entrance exams: the ACT and/or the SAT. An estimated 100% of Nevada graduating seniors in 2019 took the ACT, and the average composite score was 17.9, which is lower than the national average of 20.7. The average score on the math portion of the test was 18.0.

Only about 4% of the Nevada graduating class of 2021 took the SAT assessment. The average score on the math portion was 598 (out of 800).

Why Las Vegas students love Learner

Chelsea from Learner helped me to get a full ride to Duke University.

“Chelsea from Learner was the perfect match for me. She customized the training so that it would push me hard - but not too hard where I would get frustrated. I worked with Chelsea for years because she took a genuine interest in me and my future.”

"Stephanie taught me how to be more organized. I was getting Bs and Cs before I started working with her. I used to get overwhelmed before studying for a test. Stephanie taught me how to create “study guides” so I’d have all the big ideas in one place. I am now getting As and Bs and my parents are much happier."

"When I first started working with Alan, I told him I would never be good at math. I barely passed my first two years of high school math and I needed one more hard math class to graduate. Alan believed in me and worked with me on the basics. Little by little, he built up my confidence to the point where I realized I am good at math and I did well in the class."
