Why Ann Arbor Students Love Learner

Chelsea from Learner helped me to get a full ride to Duke University.

“Chelsea from Learner was the perfect match for me. She customized the training so that it would push me hard - but not too hard where I would get frustrated. I worked with Chelsea for years because she took a genuine interest in me and my future.”

"Stephanie taught me how to be more organized. I was getting Bs and Cs before I started working with her. I used to get overwhelmed before studying for a test. Stephanie taught me how to create “study guides” so I’d have all the big ideas in one place. I am now getting As and Bs and my parents are much happier."

"When I first started working with Alan, I told him I would never be good at math. I barely passed my first two years of high school math and I needed one more hard math class to graduate. Alan believed in me and worked with me on the basics. Little by little, he built up my confidence to the point where I realized I am good at math and I did well in the class."

How Ann Arbor Students Can Benefit from Working with Learner

Mastery of the material

For many Ann Arbor students, traditional textbooks and homework problems aren’t enough to truly understand key concepts, and fast-paced classroom lessons can prevent students from asking questions. Learner tutors provide engaging lessons with real-world examples so students truly understand how math relates to other subjects and daily life.

Preparation for college

Preparing for college isn’t just about maintaining a good GPA. Students need to prepare for college entrance exams and the faster pace of university classes. With Learner, your student can improve their study skills, prepare for the SAT and ACT, and feel ready for college and their career.

More confidence

Many students who struggle in math class lose their confidence and experience challenges in other courses. Learner tutors are patient and encouraging, giving each student the chance to work at their own pace. Ann Arbor Math Standards

Ann Arbor Public Schools’ K-12 Academic Standards were adopted in 2010. The Mathematics Standards include eleven “domains” of knowledge:

  • Counting and cardinality
  • Measurement and data
  • Expressions and equations
  • Operations and algebraic thinking
  • Geometry
  • Functions
  • Base 10 numbers and operations
  • Ratios and proportional relationships
  • Statistics and probability
  • Fractional numbers and operations
  • The number system

According to the school district, students are taught more than just basic math knowledge and procedural problem-solving algorithms. Curricula are designed to provide a deep understanding of math and relevant skills. Students learn to understand math problems and use reasoning and logic to solve them.

Ann Arbor Public Schools follow the K-12 Mathematics Standards adopted by the Michigan Department of Education. Under these standards, fifth-grade students should develop fluency with fractions and their arithmetic operations. Additionally, they learn division with two-digit divisors and start learning about volume. By eighth grade, students focus more on reasoning, modeling equations, and solving systems of linear equations. They also learn to apply the Pythagorean Theorem.

The mathematical standards for high school students center on algebra, geometry, statistics and probability, functions, and modeling. To graduate, students need at least four math credits, three of which must come from algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry.

According to College Board’s SAT Annual Report from 2021, 68 percent of Michigan students in the 2021 graduating class took the SAT during high school. Of those test-takers, 43 percent met the college-readiness benchmark in math. In 2021, half of Michigan high school juniors took the PSAT, and 41 percent of them met the math benchmark.
