I have worked as a math teacher for 4 years with students from a wide variety of backgrounds in grades K-College. I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Florida Atlantic University. I have a passion for mathematics that I want to share with all my students so math can become less daunting for them.
I have a pretty laid-back approach to tutoring; I typically go in with a loose plan so I can always keep the ball rolling. I like to start a tutoring session with a review of a concept that we covered the last time, then go into modeling a concept a student still needs work on, before finally going into any questions the student might have about something they are working on for school.
I had a student that I tutored in small groups at a local elementary school. She was about to go into grade 5, but she was only performing on a kindergarten level. A large part of her struggle with the work was that she didn’t want to show her classmates that she didn’t understand, so she just didn’t bother to try. However, we were able to turn her newfound knowledge into a point of pride, so she started to work on her studies with confidence. After one year, she was on grade level and ready for middle school!
I love video games and I have two cats that will probably make an appearance in most tutoring sessions.
