I am a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) with over 15 years of tutoring experience. I earned a Bachelor's in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a Master's degree in Teaching and Education from Western Washington University. I tutor grades 1st - College.
My approach is all about guidance and empowerment. Students have a lot to offer and the role of the teacher is to help them to find their talents and capacities and empower them to use them toward their own learning. My keen knowledge of restorative and reflective teaching practices helps build rapport with students, fostering a relaxed, more effective learning environment. I aim to create a space where students take an active role in their learning.
Half-way through the school year, I started working with a high school student who was struggling with Physics 2 and was not able to make connections between the concepts she was learning. She got a D for Physics 1 at the end of the first semester. After evaluating her knowledge through a pre-assessment, and analyzing the results together, we decided to meet 3 times per week. I retaught the concepts in Physics 1 to build her foundation and her confidence first. Then, I taught her the concepts she was learning in the second semester in class. By the end of the semester, she passed Physics 2 with an A of 94% as her grade. She took AP Chemistry with me the next year and passed both AP Chemistry 1 and 2 with A.
When I'm not teaching or volunteering, I enjoy taking long walks and dancing (especially Zumba). Having traveled to 8 countries, I love trying foods from various cultures!
