I am a tutor with 5 years of experience teaching science, math, and English at the middle school, high school, and college level. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and am a current medical student.

Tutoring Style

I am a very passionate and energetic student who loves motivating students to master content. I am very flexible with my teaching style; I set up my first session as a way to get to know students, and identify their needs and learning styles. I believe that rote memorization may not always help students. I incorporate different methods to make sure key concepts will stick for long-term, stronger learning.

Success Story

Math:

I am very happy to share a story of a student I helped. This student struggled with dyscalculia, and so had a hard time in Algebra 2. Standard ways of learning were not going to help him. I found ways to connect to him as a person, so he could trust me. From there, I would see him 1-2 times a week, going slowly with content so he could fully grasp it. I made sure to focus on him understanding the content so he could succeed. I am happy to say he was able to pass Algebra 2, in spite of his challenges, and was empowered to keep pushing as he started senior year!

Science:

I tutored a high school student in Honors Chemistry. This student was already very bright, and hard-working. However, her grades took a dip as her chemistry class was particularly challenging. I met with her once a week; I started our first session by building a rapport and identifying her interests, hobbies, strengths, and areas of improvement. From there, she trusted me to help her. I tutored her in chemistry, and taught her helpful tricks and tips to succeed. She was able to complete her course work on her own, and saw an improvement in her quiz grades, too! She told me she looked forward to our sessions, as I made the material in her hardest class fun!

ELA:

I virtually tutored weekend classes for ELA students in my local community. We had an older student from Eastern Europe in our class. This student had perfect attendance, but had a hard time participating in class. This student was especially apprehensive with reading. However, the student always engaged with games and exercises where we would talk about ourselves. I knew this student was at risk of falling behind, so I came up with a way to help. I helped hone in on this student’s strengths, and we began leading class with warm-up games. This student became more engaged and confident once she realized how much English she had learned. We still wanted the student to be able to read, but I realized that I needed to be extra encouraging, and gentle, even when this student might make a mistake. By fostering this supportive environment, she greatly improved her reading skills.

Hobbies & Interests

I LOVE cooking! My wife and I are currently on a challenge to cook food from every country in the world. We are currently 30 nations or so down that list! I also love reading, playing the djembe, swimming, and playing music.
