I am a certified teacher in my seventh year as an educator. My certification includes a Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement along with highly competent instructional designations at the secondary level for mathematics, journalism, and English language arts.
A structured, welcoming learning environment is a key ingredient for a learning environment. Another important part of that recipe is good communication. Then, once that cake is baked, it's time for the decoration (learning!). Actually I am not much of a baker, but I am a communicator, I enjoy working with others, and I love both teaching and learning.
One of my favorite mathematics success stories involves me (yours truly!) as the student. For decades, I was neither a mathematician nor teacher. When I returned for a post-baccalaureate mathematics study, twelve years after completing my original bachelor of arts degree, I had been working for more than a decade as an editor and -- get this -- a local newspaper reporter, that was all of my professional life. So in my early forties, I was definitely a "non-traditional" math student, but I fell in love with it. If an old news reporter can hack it out, that's good news for all who are challenged by math.
In my free time I enjoy cross-country running, songwriting, and learning about open source software systems.
