Hello, my name is Mx. Kaufmann! I am a special education teacher with a special interest in math. I like to teach those who struggle with regular teaching styles and practices as I use really different, and sometimes strange, practices that work for different brains. I can tutor any subject K-8 and I can tutor math through high school. I also can help with things like study skills and neurodivergent organization. I am neurodivergent myself so I can help you to use the tools that have helped me. If it sounds like you and I would be a good fit then reach out to me and we'll get working in a way that works for your brain.

I am an unconventional teacher. I believe that teaching each student must be different to meet each student where they are at. I use a variety of strategies to help students overcome academic-related anxiety, and trouble focusing, and to help the student engage more fully with the content. I like my students to fully understand the why of how things work the way that they do instead of just memorizing the methods. I rely on patterns and help students to build pattern recognition to help them understand not just their current level of math, but the math they will begin to work on at future levels.

Last time that I taught in person 92% of my math students (in a special education course) met or exceeded their quarterly math goals. Since beginning tutoring my students have reported to me that they have improved test scores, gained up to 4 letter grades, and that they better understand the math that they've been working on. I have students who have historically struggled with mathematical concepts who are now able to show mastery at and above grade-level math and can more broadly apply the concepts we work on to continue to keep pace in their classes. My goal as a private tutor is to put myself out of a job; my tutoring students should reach a point where they no longer need my assistance to continue to be successful in their math courses.

In my free time I work with my dogs; crochet clothes, blankets, and stuffed animals; and research the science behind how the brain works and learns.
