I am a certified teacher in Math and Special Education with a B.S in Physics, B.A in Creative Writing and Masters in Education Science. I have experience teaching and tutoring a diverse set of students in many different environments including virtual classrooms. I know math as a learner and a teacher and tutor students from PreK to Post Grad in Math, Science, and ELA.
I became a teacher because I love being a student. I bring passion, enthusiasm, understanding, and accountability to my teaching style. I approach each student uniquely, seeking to learn their brain first, so we can be productive and successful. My goal is to solidify conceptual understanding and critical skills so students can build their capacity for independence and problem solving.
Math:
I tutored a student over the course of her AP Calc AB class. She came to me struggling to understand what was going on in her class. She had a B in the course, but knew it would drop; she was simply memorizing procedures without knowing really how they worked in order to score well on quizzes. We worked together for about 7 months on average twice a week. The goal was for her to conceptually understand Calculus so she could complete the free response questions on the AP test. During our time together she undid a lot of the unhelpful math programming from her elementary school learning and by the end of the course she earned an A in her class and scored a 4 on her AP test.
Science:
One of my favorite student successes was a post-grad nursing student retaking and passing Physics after failing the first time and hiring me to be her tutor. Our time together began with many challenges: not only was the material hard but this student was discouraged and frustrated. We worked together 4 times a week from day one to midterms. Not only did she earn a B, but she also decided that she felt equipped enough to finish out the year on her own. Many months later I received a text saying that not only did she pass the class but she earned a B+ overall. She still needed to finish out her nursing practicals and asked me to help her prepare!
ELA:
I tutored a 9th grade student, over a period of 3 months, who struggled with organizing her thoughts into a formal essay structure. She would write random paragraphs and theses on random pages and was in the habit of never submitting assignments even though she had more than enough material- though scattered. For this particular student we worked on building the habit of free writing and then structuring her thoughts into an essay. We found just the right process that kept her organized but also gave her the space to explore all her ideas (even if they weren't relevant to the assignment). When this student came to me 100% of her assignments were not submitted and by the end of our time together not only was she submitting all assignments but she had pushed her grade up from an F to a C.
In my free time I play sports, sing, read, write, sew and more. I love being outside with my dog and recently have been baking and cooking everyday for my family!
