I have many years of experience tutoring students in grades 5-12 and recent experience working as a teaching assistant in English supplemental instruction for college students. I have a bachelor's degree in English from UCLA. I want students to love learning as much as I love teaching!
I believe that effective communication skills are so valuable to students in many different facets of life, and they go beyond the classroom. It is essential for students to find their voice and represent themselves as completely and authentically as possible. I want to empower students to express themselves and their ideas successfully, preparing them for the professional world.
My experience has taught me to evaluate student learning styles and adapt my lessons to maximize their personal understanding and connection to the material. I exercise an open-minded, patient, and fun approach throughout my sessions so that completing assignments feels more enjoyable. My first priority is always to foster a love for learning while ensuring that a student's specific goals are met.
One student was falling between the cracks in his first college level English course. He was not turning in homework or completing assignments. Little did the professor know, he was finishing his work, but before he could turn it in, he would rip up the assignment sheets into pieces due to a lack of confidence in his own abilities. In my tutoring sessions with him, I started bringing tape, so we could tape his assignments back together and review them as a group. Over time, his confidence increased, and he received a high grade in the course!
