I have eight years of tutoring experience in collegee admissions and essays, math, science, economics, and Spanish to students in middle school, high school, and college. I have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida and am starting my PhD in electrical engineering from Duke University. I tutor grades 6-college.
After going through my own college admissions process, I realized how much work and effort is required just to manage deadlines! I learned a lot from my own experience and want to use my accumulated knowledge to help others. Even with a school counselor’s help, the process can still be confusing and overwhelming for many—that’s where I come in! My goal is to help students organize the different components of their college applications—essays, test scores, supplemental writings, scholarship deadlines, and more—so they can prioritize the content of the application itself. However, I am more than just a manager; I am also a springboard! I like to help guide students to find what inspires them, motivates them, and makes them tick. I help students organize their swirling thoughts into a depiction of who they are. Choosing a college is a two-way matching system; while we often focus on colleges accepting the student, it is just as important for students to “accept” the right college and find the place that feels like home!
I had been working with a student for 2 years in math, and as she was finishing her junior year of high school, she and her mom expressed her strong desire to get into one of the top two universities in her home state. Her test scores and GPA were in the typical range of accepted students, but she was not sure how to stand out. As she went on summer break that year, I challenged her to be observant of her surroundings in her summer job—watch how people interact, see what issues people encounter, and pay attention to her own feelings during different situations. When she returned at the beginning of senior year, we started making a timeline of different deadlines (with reminders along the way), and she opened up to me about witnessing a health emergency while she was on one of her shifts at the grocery store. As she was sharing her experience with me, it became quite clear she had found her “thing”. She tied her experience in with her Common App essay and how it solidified her interest in pursuing a pre-health track. Her impactful personal statement and detailed planning led to her acceptance to one of her top choices, where she currently attends as a pre-PA major!
I also worked with a student who was a first-generation high school graduate in his family. While he was excited about the idea of going to college, he felt overwhelmed by the amount of information regarding deadlines, scholarships, and more. His family was supportive of his endeavors but didn’t know how to help him succeed. I started by talking to him about what he was looking for in a university; he wanted to be close to home but live on campus, didn’t want huge class sizes, and wanted a university that had a strong Latin-American cultural presence to feel comfortable. Using these parameters, we were able to choose his application list and then write down all the deadlines. Since he was seeking external scholarships, we also added these to his schedule and made a prioritization list, so it was clear which tasks to accomplish first. This clear-cut system gave him clarity and a plan! He was accepted into many of the schools on his list and is two years away from being the first college graduate in his family.
Outside of tutoring, I enjoy CrossFit, hiking, walking my dogs, and reading.
