I have worked with students across a wide range of academic subjects (Math, ELA, and Social Studies) ranging from elementary school to graduate level coursework. I work with students on mastering the material, guiding them through practice questions that they can apply to their current coursework. I hold a bachelor's degree in economics from Pepperdine University and am currently pursuing a Juris Doctorate degree at the University of Utah College of Law.
My academic tutoring style is structured but laid back, primarily focusing on filling in gaps from the student's classes. My goal is to work with what the student is learning to help accentuate their development, enabling them to take strides in present and future courses.
Math:
Previously, I worked with a student struggling with Geometry. The student was trying hard in class, but was scoring in the 60-70% range on all exams. I quickly realized that the problem was not with the Geometry, but rather with the more foundational Pre-Algebra material that was being applied to the course. Thus, I focused on teaching the student the fundamentals of Pre-Algebra that they utilized to increase their understanding of Geometry, and the student finished the course with an A!
ELA:
A few years ago, I worked with a student in their 10th grade English class. The student was struggling on their essays, and they were scoring particularly low in the grammar section. Thus, I spent a few weeks with them focusing on grammar fundamentals, which they were able to use to improve their writing and reading comprehension in the course!
Social Studies:
Previously, I tutored a student struggling with studying for the AP European History exam. The student was particularly worried about the essay portion of the exam. Over the course of a semester, I worked with the student to develop his essay-writing skills to meet the specific requirements of the exam. The student's writing ability significantly increased, and they scored a 5 on their exam!
I am a big Arizona Diamondbacks fan and will watch baseball when it is in season! I also like to run, work out, hike, and spend time outdoors in any way I can. I also enjoy reading, watching movies, and collecting comic books.
