I am a PhD Candidate at the University of California, Riverside and I am currently finishing the last stages of my dissertation. I have been tutoring for about 8 years, and been teaching for 5. I have extensive experience in any STEM field, and have taught university level courses.
In my time as an educator my goal has always been to be a resource for my students. I hope to strengthen their educational experience and not just be a person at the front of a classroom. I strive to do this by using active learning strategies, creating a comfortable learning environment, and being flexible so I am able to meet my students where they are. I strive to form a lasting connection between my students and education and instill a passion for learning.
As a teaching assistant one of the classes I would teach that troubled students the most was Systematics. This is an evolution based class that focuses on the creation of phylogenetic trees. The class is often so new and abstract that many students struggle. One student began coming to my office hours about halfway through the semester. Together I would answer questions that the student had but also create study plans with them to assure they were effective with their time outside of class. The student did this weekly until the end of the quarter, where they received an A in the course, and delivered one of the best presentations I had seen.
Some of my interests include cooking, reading, and hiking in nature. I also played college football during my time at Occidental College, and continue to enjoy watching and attending sporting events.
