Matthew

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching Mathematics (and Physics). Most of my experience has been at the high school level, teaching all subjects from Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus. For the past five years, I have also been teaching younger students online. I tutor Math and Science for middle school through college students.

Tutoring Style

I love Math, and I want all my students to have a good time while we learn Mathematics. I will modify my process to what the student/parents want and need. However, I believe it is best to help students learn to help themselves.

Success Story

Math:

I had a former student who started working with me during Geometry. Her parents told me her story, and it was one we hear much too often in Math. She was excelling in every subject, but had barely gotten through Algebra. It took a little time, but we got to where she stopped seeing math as a wall of tedious problems to grind through, and instead as the language of Science and Engineering (which she was very interested in). She got herself into our top track for Pre-Calculus and is now working towards her Masters in my original major, Materials Engineering (though at a rival university).

Science:

An excellent tennis player had a terrible injury, and his rearranged class schedule forced him into Senior Physics. We had to adjust his learning style to his teacher's problem-oriented approach. He worked very hard and by the Spring Semester decided not to return to his previous schedule and stuck with the tougher Physics course. He also used his extra time after school to join our Engineering club and built a trebuchet, which only missed placing in a state competition by about a foot (which isn't much when they throw about 75 yards).
