Hello! I am a Math Instructor for Grades 7-12 and at the University level for the past 17 years. I'm also a former Principal. I've written math curriculum for school districts, and I teach Math teachers all over the world and have since 2014. Tutoring for AP and IB are specialties. I simplify math so students quickly understand it, and I work to make learning enjoyable. My students get the most out of their time. I'd love to help out if I can. I am in Colorado Springs. I also used quite a bit of Calculus since my first career was as a scientist. I have a bachelor's degree in Math/Computer Science, a M.S. in Environmental Science, and an M.A. in Educational Leadership & Policy. I've led professional development for the International Baccalaureate since 2013, and I teach leadership to the federal government.
I am an energetic tutor who is passionate about education. Every student is unique, so I adapt my teaching style to each student. I work to understand their learning style and set them up for success and confidence.
Math:
One of my prior Algebra 2 students with ADHD did not enjoy math. She loved art! Together, we recognized how her attention patterns and creative strengths shaped the way she learned. We adapted instruction by breaking logarithmic concepts into short, structured segments and used color-coded visual steps to embrace her learning style as a visual artist. She could then navigate logarithms with clarity. Her test scores improved, as did her confidence.
Science:
One of my IB ESS students on the autism spectrum felt overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge and connections he needed to learn for Environmental Systems and Societies and pass the IB test. We designed graphic organizers that visually grouped the knowledge he needed, displayed the connections between the knowledge, and concretely connected to real-world environmental systems. We adapted learning ecological concepts such as energy flow and human impact on ecosystems using charts and diagrams. Over time, the student was able to apply this approach to their IB Internal Assessment. The student received college credit for the class.
Psychology:
An AP Psychology student of mine did not enjoy writing. He felt overwhelmed by it. Together we discussed what felt overwhelming, so we could find the root cause and work on addressing it together. He was overwhelmed organizing his thoughts. Together we examined student exemplars of AP Psychology free-response questions and talked about their strengths. We developed an outline for answering the questions. We practiced clear thesis statements on memory. Through targeted practice with paragraph organization and evidence-based explanations, he improved and became more confident. His FRQ scores rose.
Spent time outdoors with my 3 rescue pups! We camp, hike, fish, travel, snowshoe, cross-country ski, and raft!
