I am a creative nerd who loves learning and sharing knowledge! As a substitute teacher, I get to work with many different grade levels, and my favorite part is when I can see the light bulb over a learner's head as the material suddenly starts to make sense.
I strive to meet each student at their level and identify where they are having trouble with the material. Then we work together to see which strategies work best to help them gain confidence in their skills. Because every learner is different, I am flexible in the approaches I use to help the students find what works for them. My first goal is always to bring the student to a point where they can fully understand what the exercise is asking them to do. From there, we move forward with finding a method that the student can use with confidence, and then we practice and review in order to ensure success!
Math: I helped a 6th-grade student who was struggling with breaking down a word problem in her math class to figure out what she needed to do. As we worked to identify the important parts of the problem and look for keywords to determine the steps she needed to take, she became more confident in the process and began to solve the problems successfully on her own.
ELA: A student was having a hard time combining two short simple sentences with the same subject into one sentence with a relative clause. By writing the sentences on notecards so that the words could be moved around, I was able to demonstrate the process in a more interactive way, which helped strengthen the student's understanding of the goal. With a better understanding of what the exercise was asking him to do, he was able to complete the work more easily.
When I'm not tutoring, I like cooking and baking, creating digital art projects, hanging out with my son, and playing board games. I also enjoy playing my guitar and trying to learn ASL.
