I am an experienced science educator with more than 10 years of classroom teaching experience, specializing in Chemistry and Biotechnology, along with several years of experience teaching and tutoring a variety of science courses online. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Virginia Tech, a Master of Science in Plant Pathology from UC Davis, and a Master of Educational Technology from Boise State University. I primarily tutor middle and high school students, but I am also comfortable working with younger students and college-level learners. My extensive background in both science and education allows me to support students across a wide range of scientific subjects, academic levels, and learning needs.

Tutoring Style

My tutoring style focuses on helping students take ownership of their learning and develop a genuine understanding of the material. Rather than simply providing answers, I use thoughtful questions and guided discussion to help students work through concepts and arrive at solutions themselves. I also enjoy using interactive tools like whiteboards so students can actively participate in solving problems alongside me.

I believe tutoring should center on what the student understands and can do independently. My role is not simply to demonstrate my own knowledge, but to give students the guidance, tools, and encouragement they need to demonstrate their understanding, strengthen their knowledge, and become more confident, independent learners.

Success Stories

One of my favorite tutoring success stories is watching students conquer the math involved in solving challenging science problems. When a student who once felt apprehensive about a concept reaches the point where they can confidently say, “That’s easy,” I know we have accomplished something meaningful. Nothing feels easy until we have had the opportunity to truly learn and understand it. Seeing students develop the confidence to solve problems independently and tackle increasingly difficult material is one of the most rewarding parts of tutoring.

I especially enjoy helping students see the connections between math and science. For example, in biology, I can use genetics and Punnett squares to make algebraic concepts feel more concrete. While students may initially learn simplified allele and genotype frequencies, I enjoy challenging them to explore more complex, real-world applications, such as populations with more than two alleles. By using a familiar visual tool like a Punnett square to guide the development of an equation, I can help students see how algebra, probability, and biology work together. These connections make abstract mathematical concepts more approachable while encouraging students to think beyond memorization and develop a deeper understanding of the science.

Hobbies & Interests

When I’m not tutoring, I enjoy playing games on my phone and watching TV. I especially like word games, merge games, and jigsaw puzzle apps. My TV interests range from classic comedy like The Carol Burnett Show to series on the UP Faith & Family network. I’m also looking forward to the next season of Dancing with the Stars!
