I have twenty years experience with learners of all ages tutoring math, English, history, critical thinking, and humanities subjects to upper elementary, middle school, high school, and college students. I have a master's degree from the University of Georgia and completed doctoral coursework at Emory.
I love learning and discovery, and I love being part of students' experience of discovery.
I had a 12 year old student who was doing 8th grade math that was frequently overwhelming. One day she had half a dozen long word problems to convert into linear equations: the kind full of trick language that teach a kid to really hate math. We went through each problem using reading comprehension techniques: what does each sentence say—is it descriptive or is there a math fact to pull out? how do the parts of the problem relate? is there extraneous information we can discard? By the third problem, she had taken to it as a mystery: outsmarting the people trying to trick you with excess information!
My hobbires include backyard astronomy, calligraphy, and cartooning. I also live with five cats, and enjoy gardening.
