I am a certified teacher with three years of experience teaching Math and Physics to high school students! I have a Bachelor's degree in Applied Physics from the University of Washington, and a Masters in Teaching from Western Washington University. I tutor math and science students between 4th grade all the way to early college.
As a tutor, I lead with humor and relationship building in order to better understand the needs of my student and which strategies would be most appropriate for their situation. My tutoring style is patient yet demanding, as I push my students to engage with material at the edge of their comfort while supporting their knowledge with explanations and repetition as needed. My main objective when working with students is to teach them to go beyond "answer seeking" and to spend more time on the "why" in math and not just the "how."
A favorite success story of mine is when I helped to raise the SAT score on one of my students a whole 60 points in the math section! I worked with a high school AP calculus student on their SAT prep materials over the course of three months and compared to PSAT and other practice testing, his math score improved by around 80-90 points!
Another success story involves a student I worked with at school where I student taught. I worked after school almost every day with an AP Physics student who was considering dropping the course after the first two weeks of class due to low confidence and struggling on the first quiz. After a couple weeks of working in class together and after school, they got the highest score in the class on the momentum unit test. They went on to get a 5 on the AP Physics Exam and enjoyed the rest of class.
In my free time I love to play video games, play/create/listen to music, spend time with my partner, and read comic books! I love fiction, especially science fiction and fantasy.
