Zakiya

I am a certified life science teacher with more than 15 years of experience teaching in elementary, secondary, and college classrooms. I hold both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology and work with students from 6th grade through college. My extensive background allows me to support students across a wide range of science subjects while helping them build confidence and a deeper understanding of complex concepts.

Tutoring Style

Science doesn't have to feel like a foreign language! I specialize in breaking down abstract scientific concepts through an encouraging and highly adaptable teaching style. When standard textbook explanations aren't enough, I enjoy using creative and unconventional approaches to help students understand difficult material. My greatest reward is helping students make meaningful connections between science and the world around them, transforming concepts from something to memorize into something they truly understand.

Success Story

One of the most memorable students I worked with came into my class with a deep fear of science. Growing up, she had not been given the opportunity to study math and science in her home country, which left her feeling intimidated and unsure of her abilities. We worked together throughout the semester, and she amazed me by finishing with one of the top grades in the course.

Not only did she enroll in my next Biology class, but she ultimately changed her career path from general education to science teaching. Experiences like this are why I always remind students that they are capable of far more than they may believe. With the right support and perseverance, it's rarely a matter of "I can't"—it's simply "I can't yet."

Hobbies & Interests

In my free time, I love giving back to the community through volunteer service and working on creative projects with my son, from practicing baseball to drawing and building backdrops. I am also an avid singer and piano player, and I'm currently enjoying the journey of learning the guitar. Whether it's science, sports, or music, I simply love the process of learning and helping others build confidence along the way.
