I am an experienced tutor with years of experience at nearly all grade levels, as well as working with students of varied backgrounds and skill levels. Be it at school, at home, or anywhere else, I am here to help students achieve academic excellence, regardless of their starting point.
I am a big fan of the Socratic Method; that is to say, I like posing lessons and skills in the form of questions, to see what response I get. It helps to know how the student thinks about things, especially the topic at hand, and what methods they might already know in tackling a problem, regardless of subject. I have found that it works well when structured properly and reinforced by visuals, vocabulary, skills and tactics. And if ever need be, I find little that works better than an old fashioned demonstration on the white board.
I always feel odd about these. I'd like to think every student that I've ever helped get even a single point higher in a grade is a success, even more so when we start bringing grades up by a letter or letters. That said I remember Jared, a guy who was struggling with college algebra and his grades were keeping him from participating in extracurriculars. With the go ahead from the professor letting him retake and make up many assignments and tests, we managed to get him from roughly a 12/100 average to a high C. And that's the trick of it, I think, to my success, and really to students' successes. With proper motivation and information presented in a form that can be understood and digested, I believe anyone is capable of learning anything.
